France's Bureau Interprofessionel des Vins de Bourgogne reported slumping sales for both red and white Burgundy wines. This trade organization of producers laid the blame squarely on high prices, and the industry plans to decrease prices. Buyers should hold off until this occurs.

Chapoutier's transformation

Chapotier red wines have had a vegetal note and leathery aroma in the past that made them unpalatable. Thanks to the changes in personnel, though, the 1989 reds are splendid. Michel Chapoutier inherited the job of winemaking from Max Chapoutier.

Will big price cuts be enough?

Burgundy wine prices were lowered before Christmas, and prices are still going down, but the question remains as to whether US consumers will buy any Burgundy at all in light of the recession. Several excellent bargains are out there.
