California Merlot
Article Abstract:
With merlot gaining in popularity more wineries are trying their hand at it. It is a difficult wine to make and results have been mixed. The 1992 vintage was especially good though and several are recommended, with the Matanzas Creek Winery's Sonoma Valley getting the editor's choice nod.

California Zinfandel
Article Abstract:
The quality of the 1993 vintage zinfandels was in doubt early on, but a few months aging has proven to be very good to these wines. The Turley Zinfandel Napa Valley Hayne Vineyard gets the highest rating, while the Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley is the editor's choice.
