Good wines, tough sell: the Bordeaux draw mixed reactions in debut tastings

A great vintage is one in which good to excellent quality is achieved across the board from the lowest appellations to the best chateaus; 1995 and 2000 are examples of this, but 2002 is not. Despite the many successes, the fact remains that exceptionally good weather is required to make great wines, and 2002 had a number of problems during the growing season.
