Many contenders, few champions among Rioja's finest

Riojas are affordable wines, and some of them are very good. Only a few are outstanding, however, warranting at least a 90 rating on a scale of 100. Dozens of Riojas are rated, the confusing Rioja labels are explained, and some bodegas vintners are profiled.

White Rioja has winemakers over a barrel
Article Abstract:
Spanish winemakers traditionally aged their Riojas in wood, while the new trend has been toward aging and fermenting in stainless steel casks. Many modernists are going back to the old method for fuller flavor. Twenty-four oak-aged wines are evaluated.

Rating white Riojas

Twenty-four white Riojas are rated. The highest rated is a 1986 Marques de Murrieta Reserva at $20. It is rated 92 on a scale of 100. A 1988 Muga Crianza is rated 91. No prices is available.
