Pine Ridge's quality woes

Pine Ridge will relabel and sell as jug wine most of its 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon and all of its 1988 vintage. Winemaker Gary Andrus states that the wine is not of sufficient quality to market as Cabernet, and doing so would damage the winery's reputation as makers of fine wines.

Vintner Al Brounstein announced that his 1990 Lake Cabernet Sauvignon will be priced at $150. His same 1987 Cabernet sold for $100 in 1989. Brounstein cited market demand as the reason for his prices and state that retailers did not consider the wine overpriced.
