Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a red wine produced in Tuscany, Italy, has been celebrated since the 14th century for its complex and fruity taste. Quality declined slightly during the 1960s, but has recently been revived. Most bottles sell for $9-$22, and the best vintages are 1985, 1988 and 1990.

A big red for fall

American syrah, which has been relegated to the background for quite some time, is emerging as a popular choice of red wine comparable to Cabernet. Syrah originally came from Shiraz, Iran before it was brought to Rhone Valley, France and to California in the late 1800s.
