Inositol prevents expression of a genetic model of neural tube defects in mice
Article Abstract:
Spinal neural tube defects (NTDs) unrelated to folate consumption can be reduced by administration of myo-inositol in mutant curly tail mice, according to research by N.D.E. Greene and A.J. Copp of the University of London's Institute of Child Health. The preventive effect appears to be caused by specific up-regulation of retinoic acid receptor beta expression in the hindgut. Although the relevance for human NTDs is unknown, the mouse NTDs are similar to those in humans in a number of ways.

Folate and neutral tube defects
Article Abstract:
A rise in folic acid intake by women at the time of conception or initial stage of pregnancy effectively inhibits neural tube defects. The consumption of folic acid is increased by folic acid supplement ingestion, folate-rich foods ingestionor by food fortified with folic acid ingestion. Surveys show that the chances of neural tube abnormalities are reduced by eating fruits, vegetables and whole-grain cereals that are rich in folic acid.

Plasma homocysteine as a cardiovascular risk factor: casual, consequential, or of no consequence?
Article Abstract:
Available data indicate that elevated levels of homocysteine influence cardiovascular disease occurrence, progression, and recurrence. Randomized control trials of homocysteine-lowering therapy are necessary to establish a firm relationship.
