Total parenteral nutrition and home parenteral nutrition: an effective combination to sustain malnourished children with cancer
Article Abstract:
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a controversial nutritional program to reverse severe malnutrition in children with cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation, and infections can cause serious nutrient deficiencies in children with cancer. Malnutrition can cause immune dysfunction, organ failure and decreased tolerance to chemotherapy. TPN is effective against tumors when used in conjunction with other anti-cancer treatments.

Glutamine in parenteral solutions enhances intestinal mucosal immune function in rats
Article Abstract:
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) supplemented with glutamine and ordinary TPN affected rats differently. The supplementation of TPN with 2% glutamine helped prevent the harmful effects of TPN on gut immune function and gut lamina propria lymphocyte composition. Further studies are needed to locate the specific mechanisms that cause this effect, and to determine whether glutamine has the same effect on TPN in humans.

Functional dairy foods with Lactobacillus strain GG
Article Abstract:
The bacterium Lactobacillus strain GG appears to modulate the gastrointestinal system. Research on diarrhea show that the bacterium can reduce the duration of diarrhea. It is especially useful in infant diarrhea. Animal studies reveal that the bacterium is not toxic when fed to mice. Dairy products containing the bacterium were introduced in Finland in 1990 and there have been few reports of any side effects.
