Age- and dietary fat-related effects on biliary lipids and cholesterol gallstone formation in African green monkeys
Article Abstract:
The effects of age and dietary fat on the development of biliary lipids and cholesterol gallstones in African green monkeys were investigated. Clinically significant cholesterol levels and cholesterol saturation indices were observed only in adult monkeys. Increasing polyunsaturated fat consumption in younger animals did not translate to adverse effects on cholesterol saturation of bile or gallstone production. These results support the notion that cholesterol cholelithiasis is largely a disease of middle-aged to older adults.
