Dietary fat influences Ia antigen expression and immune cell populations in the murine peritoneum and the spleen
Article Abstract:
The effects of dietary fat in the immune system of mice is studied by measuring immune cell response to infection by Listeria monocytogenes after a 20% fat diet. Flow cytometric analysis indicates an increased production of B cells in the spleen but diminished in the peritoneum. Peritoneal cytology also showed less Ia antigen expression but greater T and B cell production after ingestion of fish oil. Macrophage presence was also limited probably due to the effect of fish oil on chemotaxis and leukotrine production. These findings indicate a varied response among different immune cells to a fat diet.

Consumption of milk from cows immunized with intestinal bacteria influences age-related changes in immune competence in mice
Article Abstract:
Immune competence of aging mice was evaluated by testing the protective effects of ingested cows milk immunized against enteric bacteria. Blood antibodies and intestinal tissue lymphocytes were analyzed to determine immune capacity. Results showed that immunized cows milk offered higher antibody activity and enteric bacterial inhibition. An increased thymocyte activity was also noted and cytolytic activity of gut-associated lymphocytes was enhanced in rats fedimmunized milk. It also suppressed the formation of autoantibodies and immunoglobulin levels remained constant.

Mouse peritoneal macrophage prostaglandin E1 synthesis is altered by dietary gamma-linolenic acid
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the effect of dietary-linolenic acid on mouse peritoneal prostaglandin E1. It was shown that mouse peritoneal macrophages elongate dietary gamma-linolenic acid to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid and converts it to prostaglandin E1 which is an anti-aggregatory, anti-inflammatory eicosanoid. Prostaglandin E1 inhibits platelet aggregation, superoxide anion generation, vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and activation of the fibrinolytic system.
