Micronutrient supplementation and infection in institutionalized elders
Article Abstract:
Elderly residents in long-term care facilities appear to have fewer infections when given micronutrient supplements of zinc and selenium. Urogenital and respiratory infection rates among elderly institutionalized patients were compared after two years of taking micronutrient supplements, micronutrients plus vitamins, vitamin supplements, or placebo. Patients taking only micronutrients had up to four times fewer infections than those taking placebo.

Overview of key nutrients: micronutrient aspects
Article Abstract:
Macronutrients become disconnected from the interplay of various other nutrients as recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) are established, since they necessarily are studied one nutrient at a time. Micronutrients are key to optimal metabolism of macronutrients. Micronutrient imbalances are closely associated with etiology of chronic degenerative diseases and rate of pathogenesis.
