Nutrition assessment in long-term care facilities
Article Abstract:
Nutrition assessment is difficult in long-term care facility patients, but two techniques were tried to improve macronutrient measurement. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to estimate fat free mass and indirect calorimetry (IC) to measure resting energy expenditure. Results indicate calculations using the Harris-Benedict equation produce frequent discrepancies and hypometabolic/hypermetabolic needs cannot be measured accurately. BIA and IC offer new alternatives to facility dietitians trying to assess their patients' nutritional needs.
