Nevada's elderly: nutrition screening, risk, and interventions
Article Abstract:
Nevada set five goals for its DETERMINE Your Nutritional Health Checklist project in regards to its growing elderly population who live high risk lifestyles. To raise public and elderly awareness of malnutrition factors, the state publicized and carried out extensive screening at senior centers and community activities. After identifying high risk elderly, mailings, phone calls, and followup interviews were conducted. Health professionals are being trained through various work shops and continuing education. Nevada is also developing an interactive computer program to increase elder self-education and assessment of their nutritional needs.

Assessing the nutritional status of the elderly: the mini nutritional assessment as part of the geriatric evaluation
Article Abstract:
The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was developed to compliment more complicated existing tests and aid malnutrition detection at an early stage, when it is most critical, in seniors. Composed of 18 measurement items which can be completed in 15 minutes or less, the MNA ca assess nutrition status in the frail elderly with 92% accuracy without biochemical indices and 98% using all comprehensive nutrition assessment factors. Because the MNA is noninvasive, quick, and an accurate alternative to more expensive biochemical or laboratory procedures, it provides health professionals with a useful alternative for nutrition assessment.

The rural elderly: living the good life?
Article Abstract:
The Geisinger Health Care System in north central/northeastern Pennsylvania developed a nutrition case management program by performing a regional screening of the largely rural population it serves. Early results indicate the elderly population averages 70 years of age, is overweight, with 40% taking three or more medications daily, and over half not meeting 'Food Pyramid Guidelines.' The screening has helped identify high-risk individuals and its coordinated regional approach should help overcome some of the rural constraints.
