Ruminant hepatic metabolism of volatile fatty acids, lactate and pyruvate
Article Abstract:
Ruminants accumulate various metabolites as a consequence of carbohydrate fermentation in the gut which generates organic acids, particularly volatile fatty acids. Most of the acetic acid generated is not utilized by hepatocytes but substantial amounts of propionate and other volatile fatty acids are absorbed. Lactate produced by tissue metabolism and gut fermentation is absorbed by the liver at a rate lower than that of propionate. Lactate and propionate conversion to glucose in hepatocytes is inefficient due to extensive cycling through the gluconeogenesis enzyme system.

Metabolism of long chain fatty acids by ruminant liver
Article Abstract:
Ruminants accomplish long-chain fatty acid metabolism in the liver through bile secretions, oxidation forming carbon dioxide, acetic acid or ketones, or storage as acylglycerols and lipoproteins. The liver absorbs fatty acids from the bloodstream and stores them as fat. Secretion of acyl glycerols either to the bloodstream or through bile is relatively small indicating that oxidation is an important mechanism in clearing excess fat in the liver. Oxidation, however, is inhibited by propionic acid and Malonyl CoA.

Article Abstract:
Regulation of nutrients necessary for various biological activities is a major function of the liver. Past research on the regulation of liver functions have increased the understanding of liver physiology and biological activity. The papers presented at the 32nd Annual Ruminant Nutrition Conference: Hepatic Metabolism of Organic Acids in Ruminants are summarized.
