The effect of fasting and fructose and glucose infusion on gluconeogenesis and triose phosphate flux in rats in vivo
Article Abstract:
Fasting and refeeding change the source and usage of triose phosphate (triose-P) in gluconeogenesis (GNG) to maintain the required concentration of glucose in the body. GNG is controlled by the liver. Fasting in rats inhibits the non-GNG production of glucose in the liver but GNG is unaffected. Fructose infusion increases GNG from triose-P and GNG conversion into glycogen. The conversion of plasma glycerol into triose-P increases during fasting and is suppressed by refeeding. Glucose infusion decreases GNG and the formation of glucose via GNG in the liver.

The enzymatic cleavage of beta-carotene: still controversial
Article Abstract:
It appears that beta carotene-15, 15'-dioxygenase from intestinal mucosa may bind beta-carotene to produce retinal, though the observed trend may be a result of ransom cleavage. Further research suggests that the conversion of beta-carotene to retinal and retinol may be the result of two different enzymes in the intestinal mucosa. A review of recent research on the process is presented.

The role of oxysterols in cholesterol homeostasis
Article Abstract:
Research presented addresses the role of oxysterols in maintaining cholesterol homeostasis. Studies included suggest excess dietary cholesterol has the effect of increasing oxysterol formation, which in turn binds to a transcription factor that regulates the degradation of cholesterol, activating its removal through the production of bile acids.
