Vitamin E enhancement of T cell-mediated function in healthy elderly: mechanisms of action
Article Abstract:
The hypothesis that vitamin E supplements will enhance the immune response of elderly people is tested using two groups of mice. The group comprised of young mice were given sufficient or high amounts of Vitamin E for one month. Those fed a high level of Vitamin E showed substantially higher proliferative response than those fed with adequate amounts, as well as high interleukin-2 (IL-2) output and the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) skin response. A placebo controlled study in humans showed that those given Vitamin E had a substantial increase in DTH as well as IL-2 production.

Recent developments in Vitamin E and immune response
Article Abstract:
Vitamin E has been shown to enhance the immune system response by possibly reducing prostaglandin synthesis and/or decreasing the formation of free radicals. Vitamin E may protect the cells of the immune system against oxidative damage. Vitamin E effects on aging, cancer and infectious disease resistance are discussed.

Biomarkers as early predictors of long-term health status and human immune function
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the existence of biomarkers as indicators for long-term health and cancer risk. Few such standards exist, and these require more research to be fully established.
