The US record industry establishment had failed to cash in on the arrival of rock 'n' roll in the early 1940s, seeing it as merely a fad, but by 1954 the big labels had realized their mistake. The mid-1950s saw the rebirth of rock 'n' roll, as it took on a new image of innocence, although under the surface the industry was tainted by bribery, corruption and scandal.
