Article Abstract:
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses that affects 33 million Americans every year and costs about $6 billion in direct and indirect costs..It occurs most often after a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Patients with asthma also have a high risk of sinusitis. Other risk factors include smoking, mold or house dust allergy, dry air, indoor air pollution, aspirin, and an allergic reaction to fungus within the nose. Treatments include antibiotics, decongestants, drugs that break down excess mucus, and surgery.
