Nation under curfew: guns, Papua New Guinea and Bougainville
Article Abstract:
Papua New Guinea's government faces difficult challenges in the late 1990s to maintain its stability as an independent country. An influx of weapons, starting in the early 1990s, has escalated tribal conflicts in the highlands. The rebellion on Bougainville island in 1990 degenerated into chaos by 1997, with government troops involved in killing a government official, rebels factioning and looting, and some islanders calling for secession. The Catholic Church has had minimal influence in curbing the violence, and the government's Nov 1996 curfew has had little effect.
