Sgt Alvin York became a war hero when he singlehandedly killed 20 German machine-gunners and captured 132 German soldiers on Oct 8, 1918, in France. York was a blacksmith and farmer prior to his enlistment in the Army. York received the Service Cross and Medal of Honors awards for his heroism.
