Top of the world
Article Abstract:
Alcatel, a division of the French firm Compagnie Generale d"Electricite, is Europe's premier manufacturer of telecommunications equipment and the second largest telecoms equipment company in the world. In 1989, Alcatel, with a turnover of $9.7 billion, trailed only AT&T, which had a turnover of $11.1 billion, in terms of sales. The merger of its Italian subsidiary with the Italian telecoms company Telettra created a new entity in which Alcatel has a 75% interest, giving it a 33% share of the transmission market in Italy and 45% of that in Spain. The turnover of the Italian entity, which was $1.2 billion in 1989, will swell Alcatel to the size of AT&T, which it has bested continually in the European markets.
