Legal limitations in the use of quotation marks
Article Abstract:
The use of quotation marks in news reports is governed by certain legal sanctions. Changing the actual statements of a person is permissible as long as they appear substantially true and do not discredit the person. Furthermore, journalists must ensure that the language they use would not be considered libelous. However, it is not only the reputation of the person quoted which is at stake when statements are altered. The news media's credibility is also affected.
