Profit Sharing - Incentive for Efficiency
Article Abstract:
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has maintained that hospitals, and other tax-exempt organizations, can have a profit-sharing plan for the benefit of employees. There are several advantages to a profit-sharing plan. Employer contributions are flexible and can be changed each year as long as they are defined by GAAP and are recurring and substantial. After contributing to the plan for two years, an employee may withdraw funds or borrow from them. Life insurance can be provided with the contributions. Employees can contribute to the fund and accumulate earnings tax-deferred. A cash or deferred arrangement savings plan is incorporated into many profit- sharing plans. A major advantage of profit-sharing is its incentive effect on employees, encouraging cost-efficiency because they will receive part of the benefits.
