Diligent historic-preservation groups rehabilitate Midwest cities' architectural legacy and then offer guided walking tours. Chicago Architecture Foundation's volunteers offered tours to over 80,000 people in 1997. Tours are also offered in St Paul, MN, Kansas City, MO, and in Cincinnati, OH.

New communities such as the Middleton near Madison, WI, and the Beachwalk in Michigan City, IN, are replacing the traditional Midwest neighborhoods. The new communities underscore interaction among residents. They present narrow, curving streets and landmarks such as a corner drugstore.
