The 1999 Alfred Eisenstaedt Awards honor eight photojournalists in the `Way We Live' category. The images represent the human drama side of routine events, happenings or competitions that reflect a combination of determination and despair. Winners include Sebastiao Salgado, Larry Fink, Lynn Johnson, Seamus Murphy, Tim Rice, James Nachtwey, Alex Tehrani, and Scott Hunt. Subject themes cover Chiapas Indian peasants, Detroit's Hair Wars contest, Missoula, MT's Chalice of Rose harpists who comfort the terminally ill, Beirut, Lebanon's Arabian horse races in the midst of Christian-Muslim tensions, life in the shadow of the Limerick, PA nuclear power plant, AIDS hospices in Thailand, African American college students' annual spring `Freaknik' celebration, and living history World War II reenactments in Texas.

Powers was one of John F. Kennedy's closest friends and his pictures of Kennedy reveals a lot about their private life. Many of his pictures are presented along with his reminisces about the president and his wife.
