Memorial Day was always the day when a woman and her husband used to plant their garden for the coming season. One year after her husband dies on Memorial Day, she does not plant that year. The following Memorial Day, she dusts off the old tiller he used to use and prepares the land alone.

A gardener never had very much use for basil and was skeptical when a good friend told her to plant three rows of it. She did so anyway, and the pesto sauce she made from it convinced her that from that point on she needed a steady supply of basil.
