The Dept. of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Section 8 program has proven to be a very costly government project. HUD is spending as much as $15 billion annually in rental subsidies and additional spending to renew landlord contracts will amount to $16 billion in 1997.

The spotted owl and logging controversy continues to plague Oregon private landowners. It started when the northern spotted owl was not considered as a threatened or endangered species. Timber sales stopped causing loggers and mill employees to lose their jobs.
