Winter heat; Death Valley makes California Scouts bake by day, shiver by night

Boy Scout troop 888 of Covina, California makes an annual trek to camp in Death Valley in the winter. The weather presents challenges in that the temperature swings widely between day and night. There are many historical sites in Death Valley which provide interesting destinations for expeditions.

Naval Academy midshipmen who are members of the National Eagle Scout Assn sponsor a merit badge jamboree each year. Ten percent of the Academy's midshipmen are Eagle Scouts. Scouting helps provide future midshipmen with the skills that they need for military life.

The Navajo Indians hosted a camporee for 600 Boy Scouts near Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona in 1993. The Scouts hiked into the canyon with a Navajo guide and learned about Navajo culture and history.
