Campaign money and the Internet
Article Abstract:
The Californian Legislature's attempt to establish electronic filing requirements for election campaign data failed in 1996 as neither Republicans nor Democrats are interested in allowing the other party to garner a reformist image. Politicians, cutting across party lines, are in favour of posting campaign finance information on the Internet so as to provide wider accessibility to campaign donor lists. However, their anticipation of potential problems in the 1996 election year made them reluctant to provide quick support to the four bills, catering to electronic filing.

The resurgence of labor
Article Abstract:
The labor unions of California are regaining strength, following a period in they which lost political importance due to the state's shift from defense-based and traditional industries to hi-tech, finance and service industries. The power of factory and service industry workers' unions is growing. Labor unions are focusing on the important ballot issues for the 1996 elections and the bigger unions are also spending money in the legislative race. However, the movement needs coordination and restructuring to maintain its political clout.
