Demand for health insurance and precautionary motives for savings among the elderly
Article Abstract:
The savings behavior of the elderly is examined against the functional relationship between health insurance purchases and individual capacity to self-insure. The Medicare and Medicaid programs are integrated into the evaluation of precautionary motives for saving. Precautionary behavior is observed among individuals involved with health insurance contracts. Such behavior is extended consistently in the case of individuals over-insured by Medicare.
