The new crusaders
Article Abstract:
Candidates of the Christian right suffered defeats in the recent elections for seats in the State Assembly. However, members of the conservativereligious right expressed the view that they made substantial gains in their effort to further strengthen their ranks. Opponents of the religious right agreed with this observation. Furthermore, the religious right strengthened their hold over the California Republican Party. Some Republican Party leaders are worried that the conservative right will draw away voters vital to the party's electoral successs.

Did the Christian right torpedo one of its own?
Article Abstract:
Democratic candidate Debra Bowen won overwhelmingly over Republican Brad Parton in the race for the assembly seat in California's 53rd Assembly District. Observers credits Bowen's success to the almost equal registration ofvoters by both parties in the District and the clear-cut distinctions between the two rival candidates. Bowen believes that Parton's links with the Christianright proved crucial in her success.
