District-by-district analysis: congress
Article Abstract:
The congressional elections for the various districts in the state of California was a truly Democratic victory. With the new district lines drawn by the state Supreme Court dominated by Republican appointees, the Republicans expected a clear-cut victory. However, they did not figure on the Californians' disillusionment with the state of the economy, which they blamed on a government headed by the GOP at both the state and federal level. After the elections, the Democrats had increased their number to 30, from a previous 26 House seats. A district-by-district tally of votes is presented.

End of an era
Article Abstract:
The California Senate stands to lose an intelligent and experienced consensus builder as Sen Kenneth Maddy's term limit expires. Having served Sacramento, CA, for 28 years, Maddy's legacy will comprise more than just his intelligence and experience. He will also be remembered for his bipartisan goodwill and personal charm, traits that have made him an agreeable political opponent. During his time as legislator, Maddy became significantly responsible for reforming the Medi-Cal system in 1982, aside from other health care and tax reforms.
