Gridlock ... and beyond
Article Abstract:
California's business community, through the Business Roundtable, first reported the need to improve the state's aging infrastructure in Aug 1998. Knowing that the transportation crisis is partly of its own making and that commute-stressed workers cannot function effectively at work, the sector has launched the Altamont Commuter Express, together with the local governments of San Joaquin, Santa Clara and Alameda. The $73 million project has reduced commute by one-third and has travel more comfortable by installing work tables, bike racks, laptop computers and an Espresso bar in trains.

Women's work
Article Abstract:
The health care industry in the 1990s has increasingly relied on nurses and other lower-level professionals to carry out much of the responsibilities in patient care traditionally performed by physicians. However, nursing is a dominantly female occupation and nurses are increasingly becoming more militant in their efforts to win respect and recognition for the skilled practitioners that they are. In an era of downsizing, these nurses insist that patient care is being jeopardized, yet must deal with gender perceptions that continue to persist.
