Research investigating the the efficiency of the redistribution system in the social security benefit is presented. Particular attention is given to analyses of data collected from surveys and histories of earnings reflecting family incomes.

The Canadian experience of increased unemployment benefits dating from 1971 is evaluated. Its effects on the likelihood of collecting benefit are explored and the links with disincentives to work are discussed.
