Is mortgage lending by savings associations special?
Article Abstract:
Savings associations show the same level of sensitivity as commercial banks to the changes in home prices and borrower's income. Moreover, the elimination of the savings association charter may not negatively affect the lending to nontraditional mortgage borrowers such as low-income mortgage borrowers. Furthermore, the portfolio choice of the traditional lender is not affected by the changes in demand-side variables while the nontraditional lender is dependent to such changes.
