Judicial review
Article Abstract:
The chief justice of the California Supreme Court, Ronald George, and three other judges, were concerned that they may not be reconfirmed in post because anti-abortionists were campaigning against them. However, the judges won convincing majorities and were reselected. This reflects a change in voting patterns because support for judges in office has been declining and three of them were removed from office in 1986. Failure to be tough on crime was a primary cause. Judges have become stricter now. A booming economy also makes voters feel more satisfied with the status quo.

Paying the tab for recall elections
Article Abstract:
California Republicans failed to oust Democratic Assemblyman Mike Machado in a recall election in 1995. He was targeted as he voted for his own party's nominee as speaker. Following the failure of the recall effort, Machado asked the state of California, via the Board of Control, to reimburse the campaign cost of defending himself against the recall. If the Board recommends that the claim be paid, then it will be included in an omnibus bill and introduced in the Legislature along with other claims. If reimbursement is denied, Machado may take the matter to court.

Tracing the money
Article Abstract:
California Sec of State Bill Jones aims to crack down on the fund-raising activities of multiple ballot-measure committees as the state's chief enforcer of campaign disclosure laws. These multiple ballot-measure committees are those which support or oppose more than one initiative on the ballot. Jones believes these groups are getting away with concealing the amounts they raise and spend on behalf of a single measure.
