What drives racial segregation? New evidence using census microdata
Article Abstract:
The question of whether racial differences in sociodemographic characteristics can explain observed levels of racial segregation is re-examined using restricted census microdata that link households to the census block in which they live. A simple measurement framework is developed to make use of the rich joint distribution of individual and neighbourhood characteristics, analyzing segregation patterns in the San Francisco Bay Area.

On the equilibrium properties of locational sorting models
Article Abstract:
The equilibrium properties of a broadly applicable and readily estimable class of sorting models is developed that allow location decisions to depend on both fixed local attributes and local interactions. An equilibrium that will always exist in this class of models under a set of easily satisfied conditions, and the equilibrium that will be unique under conditions encountered in many empirical problems are demonstrated.
