Article Abstract:
Campaigning is becoming more intensive as the California presidential primary, scheduled for Mar 7, 2000, approaches. The primary will be particularly important for the Republicans, who have not fared well in the last two election cycles in California. However, the Democrats are also facing a number of challenges. Most political strategists in California will be focusing on demographic and registration trends that started in the mid- to late 1990s. Candidates and ballot campaigns will closely target the expanding mass of non-aligned voters.

June 1998: open primaries, open wallets
Article Abstract:
The 1998 California primary season seems to indicate that there is some truth in Pres Harry S. Truman's observation that nominations for public office could be bought. Both political consultants and candidates seem to believe that personal wealth is a must for those aspiring for public office. The practice of self-financed candidacy is nothing new in California, with Republicans Michael Huffington and Rob Hurtt leading the pack of 'checkbook campaigners.' The race for various legislative, congressional and state positions is discussed.
