Mel Levine: can he spend himself to a Senate victory?
Article Abstract:
US Rep Mel Levine (D-CA) is running for the Democratic nomination for the US Senate. In his legislative career, Levine has been known to go against political party leadership and vote according to personal belief, as shown by his 1991 vote for US military action in the Persian Gulf. A self-proclaimed 'progressive Democrat,' Levine offers an alternative to traditional politicians. His stand on environmental issues contests offshore oil drilling. Levine is in favor of the death penalty, but has no specific plans yet for defense budget cuts and national health and welfare policy. Levine has raised $4 million for his campaign.

Sonny Bono: is this guy for real?
Article Abstract:
Showman-turned-politician Sonny Bono is running for the Republican nomination for the US Senate. Bono, the mayor of Palm Springs, CA, has positioned himself as an outsider. Bono has been criticized as not having enough grasp of the issues involved. Bono feels that the achievement of goals and not analysis is the best way to confront prevailing issues. Bono has pro-choice sentiments, opposes the granting of minority status to gays and proposes cuts to the defense budget and to the capital gains tax.
