One big tap: merging the giant state and federal water projects
Article Abstract:
The Central Valley Project (CVP) initiated in 1935is one of the largest water projects in California. The Senate passed a preliminary version of the CVP reform legislation in the wake of a six consecutive years of drought, while Congress is working on its own version. TheCVP supplies 20% of the state's water and services agricultural production which grosses $18 billion a year. Farming interests inspired the CVP draft by Senator John Seymour. Issues surrounding the CVP bill range from irrigation subsidies to environmental restoration appropriations and state takeover of theproject.
