Rome at bay: the challenge of the Northern League to the Italian state
Article Abstract:
Many northern Italians resent the political dominance of southern Italy, and the political patronage of the ruling Christian Democrats who stock their ranks with inept southerners and mismanage the country to their own profit. Popular sentiment against the political class has been put to good use by the Northern League, which agitates for the linguistic, cultural and economic autonomy of the modern, industrial north against the archaic, Mediterranean south. Despite the wide perception in the north that Rome's rule is parasitic, the League can effect change only through negotiation and alliance-building.

Italy: a clean-up after the cold war
Article Abstract:
Italy's current political crisis reflects the end of the cold war in 1991. The East-West conflict took shape in Italy in the struggle from the 1950s to the 1990s between the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and the conservative forces led by the Christian Democratic Party (DC) who feared that the PCI was becoming dangerously powerful. However, since 1991 the public's attention has shifted away from the PCI-DC conflict and toward the crime, corruption, high unemployment and fiscal mismanagement that plague Italy. Political reform in Italy is highly warranted.

Opposition in Italy in the 1990s: local political cultures and the Northern League
Article Abstract:
The northeastern section of Italy has been under the control of the Italian Communist Party, now the Party of the Democratic Left (PDS), since World War II. The PDS won the 1996 general election, and has lead efforts to combat government corruption. However, the remainder of the nation is strongly influenced by the Christian Democrat/Catholic, or White, coalition. Each context has developed under different political systems, and must be understood to structure a sufficiently flexible arrangement for the country.
