Scotland and Northern Ireland: constitutional questions, connections and possibilities
Article Abstract:
The subject of Northern Ireland brings up constitutional questions, connections and possibilities related to Scotland and a Scottish parliament, which might give Scots a way to focus and express Scottish opinion about Northern Ireland. Some say the Northern Ireland problem should be seen, especially in Scotland, more widely and in context, as part of a situation in which there is a melting together of cultures of two islands, that of Britain and Ireland. Some parts of Britain are not English, but different identities can coexist. The idea of Britishness should be examined.

The Scottish constitutional convention, nationalism and the union
Article Abstract:
Scotland's moves toward constitutional sovereignty would weaken government in the United Kingdom by creating a body that would compete for authority. Of the four directions that the Scottish Constitutional Convention could have chosen, independence, the current system, a Scottish parliament or a federal system for the UK, the choice of a parliamentary system is the closest to Scottish Nationalist Party doctrine. Federal reform of the UK's parliamentary system would improve representation without crippling administration through conflict.

Conservative education policy: its ideological contradictions
Article Abstract:
The Conservative governments which had presided over the UK since 1979 adopted education policies that were meant to address pressing issues facing the country's educational system during those years. However, whether or not these policies have benefited the country remains open to question. One thing that remains clear is that the policies have not led to a reformed UK educational system. This is because contradictory objectives on educational reform were possessed by the various Conservative leaders.
