Run, Pete, run
Article Abstract:
California's governor Pete Wilson has expressed his willingness to run for president. Wilson has not formally declared his candidacy, but in reality, Wilson is in the fray as fund raisers are being scheduled and a strategy is being chalked out. Wilson needs to raise a fund of $20 million and start a national campaign organization to win the presidency in 1996. Wilson's campaign is significant because of the timing, his standing in the Republican party and his popularity. The negative points against Wilson are his promise of not running for president, his record and lack of charisma.

Devil in the details
Article Abstract:
Gray Davis, the first Democratic Governor of California for almost 20 years, has been widely judged during his first 100 days in office by the standards established by his two Republican predecessors, Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian. He has shown considerable skill in policy making, but has so far been less successful in dealing with the many small decisions and acts that combine to form an effective administration. His main organizational problem is that he did not come to the governorship with an existing group of trusted advisors who had already shown loyalty and competence.

California Republicans have installed Assembly Republican Leader Curt Pringle as speaker of the California Assembly. It came 14 months after the Republicans won a majority of seats in the state's 80-member Assembly. It also ended the Democrats' dominance over the Assembly which began in 1980 with the rise of Democrat Willie Lewis Brown, Jr. as speaker. Brown resigned in Dec 1995.
