Antonio Villaraigosa, speaker in the Californian Assembly, candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles, CA, has a higher than anticipated profile because of his endeavors to solve the problems involving the Los Angeles Unified Schools District and contaminated school sites. The situation could help his candidacy or jeopardize it. He is more popular with Latin Americans than locals.

L.A. story: mayoral runoff shows diversity
Article Abstract:
The 2001 Los Angeles mayoral campaign is a good example of how ethnically and racially diverse the United States have become, and that this diversity is bringing about change. Los Angeles voters could choose between a Latino, a female, an openly gay, and a Jewish candidate, as well as a white candidate who is respected by the local African-American community.

Brief history of the candidates running for the race of the mayor of Los Angeles is discussed. There are 20 candidates for the post of mayor for the year 2005, but only five contenders, all Democrats, have the money and the resources to compete seriously for the office.
