The revival of John Burton
Article Abstract:
San Francisco Democrat John Burton remains a leader in the California Assembly after 30 years in public service. His career took off in the shadow of his brother Philip, who gerrymandered a congressional district for him in 1980. John succumbed to a chemical dependency, but emerged from it to take a decisive behind-the-scenes role in the Assembly. Long a friend of Speaker Willie Brown, he masterminded Nancy Pelosi's and Barbara Boxer's successful 1992 campaigns.
