Tracing the roots of teacher tenure
Article Abstract:
US law is designed to protect teachers from unreasonable treatment in the workplace. The state is obliged to spend enormous sums of money and time to achieve the dismissal of wholly inadequate teachers under current legislation, however. Teacher unions, which accept that some Californian teachers are sub-standard, agree that teacher tenure laws should be modified to make such dismissals less complex.

The teachers' unions under fire
Article Abstract:
US teachers' unions have come under pressure to justify their stance against moves to change teacher-tenure laws. Two teachers' unions, California Teachers Association (CTA) and California Federation of Teachers (CFT), are enormously powerful in State politics and represent a total of 385,000 members. CTA and CFT may merge although their attitudes over teaching standards differ.

Case study: origins of tenure
Article Abstract:
Teacher tenure laws are designed to protect teaching professionals from unfair rules in the workplace. In the past, teachers were obliged to abide by rules which seriously impacted their lifestyles. Women, such as former teacher Mary Louise Phillips, were not allowed to continue teaching once they were married. Black teachers were forced to teach in segregated schools.
