Uncivil war: moderates and conservatives wage a bitter battle for control ofthe Republican Party
Article Abstract:
Moderates and Conservatives in the Republican Party are struggling to set a political direction mutually acceptable to both wings so that the party may be able to control the Legislature. Conflict between the two groups are rooted in ideological as well as class differences. Moderates are usually better-educated, earn more and believe in government and abortion rights. Conservatives count some blue collar workers in their ranks, most of whom are Christian fundamentalists who think that government is the problem. Wilson is carefully picking Republican candidates who can work with him.

The Wilson legacy
Article Abstract:
Gov Pete Wilson's significance to California politics has been considered more substantial than that of any other former California governor due to his approach to the 1991 reapportionment and his 1994 campaign for Proposition 187. Wilson can be credited for having efficiently led California through its economic transition from defense spending to one that relied on agriculture, entertainment and international trade. However, his unpopular stand on such issues as immigration and affirmative action failed to unite the state's multiethnic population.

The nature of prejudice
Article Abstract:
Prejudice has always existed throughout the history of mankind. It reveals itself in different forms, be it discrimination, bigotry or racism. In a highly diverse state as California, understanding the roots of prejudice is crucial to fostering a peaceful society. There are two schools of thought as to the causes of prejudicial attitudes. One argues that it is learned through cultural contacts while the other asserts that it is cultivated by the dominating social groups to rationalize and protect their status.
