Unions, Latinos gain ground in the Southland

Article Abstract:

Latinos and trade unions are playing an increasingly significant role in Californian politics, and the synergy between these two groups has created a powerful political force. This has been reflected recently in the victory by the Service Employees International Union in its long-running battle to represent 74,000 home care workers in Los Angeles County, CA. The labour movement is now embracing women and minorities, particularly Latinos. These population groups form the basis of the new, low-wage, service-sector economy in Southern California.
