An Internal Search for Capital
Article Abstract:
The health care industry is entering a period of change with the ideology of deregulation. The market place has become and is becoming increasingly more competitive. To survive the profit/capital crunch, the hospitals will need to become lean, self-sufficient and market-oriented in contrast to the past 'reasonable cost' era. In order to grow, growth capital from internal sources needs to be invested in order to avoid procuring expensive outside capital. Due to the labor intensive nature of hospitals, productivity management is the key to cost-cutting and increasing output of quality services. Management engineering is an important concept based on industrial engineering involving increasing productivity and monitoring systems. To survive these changes in the environment, not-for-profit hospitals need to quickly and appropriately respond with managerial improvements.
