The effect of rural hospital closures on the financial performance of neighboring rural hospitals
Article Abstract:
Financial data on several rural community hospitals was analyzed to determine whether the closure of one hospital affected the financial performance of surviving neighboring hospitals. Comparisons of data taken between 1985 and 1989 for closures in 1987 and between 1986 and 1990 for closures in 1988 were used. Results showed that the closure of hospitals had a positive impact on the volume of patients of neighboring hospitals. However, the increased patient volume had no impact on the average costs of medical care and profitability.

Hospital ownership of post-acute care: does it increase access to post-acute care services?
Article Abstract:
An examination of the relationship of hospital characteristics and access to post-acute care (PAC) revealed a few significant hospital characteristics influencing use of PAC. A comprehensive database that combines hospital characteristics with clinical and demographic information of patients was used. Data was drawn from 52 hospitals and 2,572 patients within five diagnosis-related groups (DRGs). Across the DRGs studied, patient characteristics were more consistent predictors of PAC.

A study based on Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, State Inpatient Data for Florida from 1996 to 2000 examining the correlation between the hospitals financial pressures and patient safety events is presented.
